Dunsborough Physio. has recently purchased a real-time ultrasound unit. This allows us to assess your ability to engage your deep abdominals, which is critical to back health. Real-time ultrasound can also bee used to assess your ability to contract your pelvic floor effectively. Our physiotherapy staff can help you to understand how to effectively engage your core. Here is a picture showing some of the important deeper muscle groups which corset the spine, creating core stability. The stronger the core muscles are, the less shear force/compression transferred through the spine. Better core strength allows the bigger superficial muscles to generate greater power. When participating in exercise which is designed to improve core strength it is essential to know that you are actually engaging the relevant muscles. Research has shown that around 50% of people who are taught to contract their deep abdominals via verbal instruction are using incorrect technique. With real-time ultrasound we can see the deeper muscles contracting on screen, and teach you how to create an effective contraction. If you think you could benefit from core strengthening call Dunsborough Physiotherapy Centre ph: 97 553600 To visit the Dunsborough Physiotherapy Centre website (http://www.dunsborough physio.com.au) click / tap here
